In a perfect world, I'd go to the cinema several times per week and actually see all of the movies that I'd like to see. But that's just not practical or affordable, so video is the next best thing. (And hey, call me a homebody if you want, but it's nice to hang out on the couch, under a blanket, and munching popcorn with my wife.) I'm not going to list all of the videos I see; just the ones I want to comment on.

The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)

This is, admittedly, one of my favorite movies. It fared poorly at the box office (in fact, I think it may have been the single costliest flop of 1994), which only goes to show that too many moviegoers are illiterate cattle. The movie's visual design is wonderful: Joel and Ethan Coen create a 1930s-ish industrial society that at times seems to really want to jump into Brazil territory -- but knows it's too classy for that. Tim Robbins plays an apparent dolt whose brilliant idea can be summed up on a piece of paper he carries in his shoe, while Paul Newman is the essence of the scheming business tycoon. [21-Jan-00]
